Outstanding Aklanons to be honored

Seven Aklanons who excelled in their various fields of endeavor are set to be honored in an awarding ceremony to be held at the ABL Sports Complex for Aklan’s celebration of its 56th anniversary on April 25.

This year’s seven Outstanding Aklanons, who will be honored in a fitting ceremony include Russ Patrick P. Alcedo, Awardee in the Field of Arts (Dance); Lucielo C. Ramirez, Awardee in the Field of Public Service, Anita C. Gomez-Rescate, Registered Pharmacist, Awardee in the field of Business and Industry; Larry P. Nacionales, Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Awardee in the Field of Agriculture; Engr. Merly M. Cruz, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) USEC, Government Service; Dr. Victorina S. Laroza, Education; and Gaudencio P. Vega, Medicine.

These Seven Outstanding Aklanons were chosen among nominees submitted to the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), secretariat of the search and were selected based on the given criteria.

This year’s awardees are a mix of young and old Aklanons, some of whom are serving their fellow Aklanons in the homefront while some are in other parts of the country and distant shores sharing their expertise with other people or races.

Russ Patrick Alcedo of Kalibo, Aklan, Awardee in the Field of Arts (Dance), is currently the only Filipino Professor at York and has joined a handful group of Filipino Scholars who hold a tenure-track appointment from a university in North America, after being the only Filipino selected by the Asian Cultural Council (Rockefeller Brothers Fund) to be a Ford Foundation Fellow from 1996-2001.

In addition, Lucielo C. Ramirez, of Tigayon, Kalibo, Aklan, served in various capacities in the government sector and in the international community which started through his posting as Regional Specialist for the International Volunteers Services in Washington DC and in Vietnam in the 60s; and in the next 27 years of his life, served in various capacities in the international communities in Mozambique, Sudan, and Iraq, just to name a few.

On the other hand, Anita C. Gomez-Rescate is the founder and Chief Operating Officer of Farmacia Gomez and Rescate Group of Companies, holding the distinction as the “Longest Surviving Entrepreneur" in Aklan with a chain of drug stores operating for a very long period of time since 1958.

Larry Nacionales is currently the regional director of DA Region 6, born to Aklanon parents from Paningayan, Madalag, Aklan. His achievements include different fields of studies and papers with positive impact to farmers. Presently, he oversees proper planning and implementation of various banner programs of the DA.

Engr. Merly Cruz of the DTI was born in Lezo, Aklan who took her BS Chemical Engineering Degree at the Mapua Institute of Technology. Currently, as USEC for Regional Operations and Development, she supervises all DTI regional offices, four bureaus, and project management offices.

Dr. Victorina Laroza of Batan, Aklan has just recently retired as Division Superintendent of DepEd-Aklan and has served in various positions in private and public schools as school head, District Supervisor, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, and eventually Schools Division Superintendent.

Gaudencio P. Vega, born in Kalibo, Aklan currently holds the position as chair in the Department of Radiology in UP-PGH Medical Center and has also served at the Radiation Oncology Section at Medical City General Hospital and Chinese General Hospital and at the Department of Radiology of Lourdes Hospital.

Honoring Aklan’s outstanding sons and daughters is one of the highlights of activities of the province’s Aklan Day celebration. (JSC/VGV-PIA 6 Aklan)
