The musical play, “Katipunan, Mga Anak ng Bayan” featuring the life and works of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio will return to this city on September 13 and 14.

Mounted by Gantimpala Theater Foundation, the two-hour play will be held at the Colegio de Dagupan-Arzadon Gymnasium in Leisure Coast Hotel and Resort here on from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and at 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Directed by Joel Lamangan and Jun Pablo, the play was originally staged in this city on August 29, which made the audience, composed mostly of students from various Pangasinan schools, learn about an important part of Philippine history.

Pablo said the play provided viewers a glimpse of Bonifacio’s contributions in the country’s struggle for independence.

“Nakakalungkot na hindi natin masyadong kilala si Bonifacio, na marami pala siyang ginawang sakripisyo para sa ating bayan as proponent of the revolution (It is sad to note that we know little about Bonifacio, that he had sacrificed greatly for our nation as proponent of the revolution),” said Pablo.

Through this play, the people can recall the evolution of the mass-based revolutionary organization, the role of women in the struggle, the internal conflicts that weakened it and discover the lessons from the struggles and triumphs of the Great Plebian.

The Katipunan play is the theater company’s contribution to the sesquicentennial or 150th birth anniversary celebration of Bonifacio on November 30.

Playing major roles are Sandino Martin as Andres Bonifacio; Anna Fegi as Gregoria “Oryang” de Jesus, second wife of Bonifacio; and RJ Jimenez as Emilio Jacinto, known as the Brains of the Katipunan.

The script was written by Bonifacio Ilagan and won the first prize in the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ playwriting contest in 1978.

The show will also be staged in San Carlos City, Pangasinan on September 20. (MCA/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
