The new homes of victims of Sendong
Three and a half (3.5) months after Typhoon Sendong, President Benigno S. Aquino III will lead the turn over ceremonies for an initial five hundred (500) houses in the Calaanan Resettlement Site (Phase III) in Cagayan de Oro City. Priority beneficiaries are families with small children, those with pregnant and lactating mothers, and those with surrogate parents of orphaned children living in evacuation centers with totally damaged houses. Families whose head of household died or were incapacitated as a result of the disaster, and families with seriously-ill members, or persons with disabilities or with special needs were also given priority in the selection process
Built through the DSWD’s Core Shelter Assistance Program (CSAP), and in cooperation with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Cagayan de Oro Local Government Unit (CDO LGU), and Habitat for Humanity (HFH), structurally strong and indigenous shelter units were constructed in disaster safe relocation/resettlement areas and the families are assured that their new homes can withstand wind velocities of up to 220 kilometers per hour and earthquakes up to intensity four (4).
The beneficiaries were identified through the Beneficiary Selection, Award and Arbitration Committee (BSAAC), composed of the DSWD, the City Social Welfare and Development, Estate Management Division, National Housing Authority, and representatives from non-government organizations as well as participants from the affected families.
Currently, the DSWD is conducting a raffle-draw of house numbers/address for beneficiaries in Calaanan. DSWD will also distribute Kitchen Kits and Family Food Packs while the Office of Civil Defense will give out Starter Kits, all amounting to around eight million (PhP 8M) pesos.
A total of one thousand two hundred sixty-two (1,262) houses will be built in Calaanan Phase III. All houses are expected to be completed by August of 2012
