WHERE DID THESE COME FROM?. How the two sus-pects got hold of these banned assault rifles (right photo) is the subject of the CIDG’s investigation.

Three criminal complaints are being prepared for filing against two men who were caught trying to sell two assault rifles and ammunition magazines in an entrapment operation in Virac last week.

Joint elements of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Catanduanes provincial field unit led by Major Elvis Angayangay and the Virac police station led by acting chief of police Major Bon Billy Timuat arrested tricycle driver Vince Borjal Bongat, 46, of San Roque, and truck driver Joselito Socito Valencia, 52, of Danicop, last June 1, 2019 at 2:30 A.M. in barangay Pajo Baguio after the duo handed over the deadly weapons to Patrolman Echerius Apuya,  who posed as buyer.

Seized from them were an AR-15 9mm assault rifle and two magazines, an Ingram MAC-11 submachine gun and three magazines, a silencer for an Uzi assault rifle, a 4-inch bladed weapon, a Nokia 3310 cellphone, the green Rudi motorcycle they were using and the real P500 bill together with a bundle of boodle money used in the sting.

Both Bongat and Valencia will be charged for violation of Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, COMELEC Resolution 10446 or the election gun ban, and Batas Pambansa Blg. 6 on the illegal possession of bladed weapon.

The two suspects and the evidence were brought to the CIDG-PFU for proper disposition. No other details, particularly where the suspects got the deadly rifles, were provided by the police unit.

The AR-15 rifle is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle based on the ArmaLite AR-15 design and has been used by those responsible for several mass shootings in the United States of America.

On the other hand, the Ingram MAC-11 (Military Armament Corporation Model 11) is a subcompact machine pistol capable of emptying its entire 32-round magazine in less than two seconds. Its high rate of fire makes it highly inaccurate and is recommended for use only in close-quarter combat.

Under the law, only small arms may be registered by licensed citizens or licensed juridical entities for ownership, possession and concealed carry. Violation of the provisions of RA 10591, particularly illegal possession of guns capable of fully automatic bursts of discharge, could lead to life imprisonment.
